Setting Up an Edimax Router with a Cable Modem Hostname
An Edimax router can usually share a cable modem connection with very little manual configuration. The exception is a service that identifies the customer’s equipment by a required hostname. In that situation, the router may receive no internet address until the correct device name is entered in its WAN or internet settings.
The hostname is different from the Wi-Fi network name and different from the router’s administrator password. It is a value supplied by the internet provider, often linked to the original modem or customer account. Some providers use a simple text label, while others require a specific format that must be copied exactly.
Australian households can encounter this arrangement on older cable services, provider-managed cable networks, or connections where a modem has previously been registered. It should not be assumed that every NBN connection uses a hostname. NBN HFC installations commonly present an Ethernet connection from an NBN connection box, while a legacy DOCSIS cable modem may have different requirements.

Check The Modem And Service Details

Contact the internet provider or check its BYO router documentation for the exact hostname. Ask whether the connection requires a dynamic IP address with a hostname, a static IP address, PPPoE credentials, a VLAN tag or MAC address registration. A hostname may be called a “DHCP client name”, “DHCP hostname”, “cable modem name” or “host name” in provider documentation.
Record any other details before disconnecting the existing equipment. Write down the previous modem’s internet settings, the account number, the Wi-Fi name and the original modem’s MAC address if the provider mentions it. Some Australian ISPs support customer-owned routers but publish separate settings for different access technologies, so information for an NBN FTTP service may not apply to an HFC or older cable connection.
If the service is in Sydney, Melbourne or another area with older cable infrastructure, the provider may still refer to a cable modem in its support material even if the household has changed equipment over time. Do not guess the hostname from the suburb, account name or Wi-Fi network name. Use the exact value provided by the ISP, including hyphens, full stops or capital letters where applicable.
Connect The Edimax Router Correctly
Turn off the cable modem and the Edimax router before moving cables. Connect the modem’s Ethernet port to the Edimax port labelled WAN, Internet or sometimes a globe symbol. Do not use one of the numbered LAN ports for this connection. Connect a computer to a numbered LAN port with another Ethernet cable during setup, or use the Edimax default wireless network if a wired connection is not practical.
Power on the modem first and allow it to complete its startup sequence. This can take several minutes while the modem synchronises with the cable network. Once its online, downstream and upstream indicators show the normal state described in the modem manual, power on the Edimax router. This order helps the router obtain a fresh DHCP lease from the modem instead of retaining a failed or incomplete request.
Open a browser on the connected computer and enter the Edimax management address in the address bar, not into a search engine. Common Edimax addresses include 192.168.2.1, 192.168.1.1 or edimax.setup, depending on the model and firmware. The correct address is printed in the manual or on the device label. If the page does not load, check the computer’s network details and use the default gateway shown there.
Sign in with the administrator details supplied with the router. Older Edimax models may use a default username and password printed on the label, while newer models may ask you to create an administrator password during first-time setup. Change any factory password immediately. A router administration password controls the device itself and should not be the same as the wireless password used by household devices.
Enter The Required Hostname
Find the internet connection page by opening Quick Setup, Internet Setup, WAN Setup or General Setup. Select Dynamic IP, DHCP or Automatic IP if the provider says the service obtains its address automatically. Look for a field labelled Host Name, DHCP Hostname, Client Name or Device Name. Enter the value exactly as supplied by the cable provider.
Avoid entering the Wi-Fi network name, the router model, the modem serial number or a personal description unless the ISP specifically says to use one of those values. The hostname is sent as part of the router’s DHCP request. A small spelling difference can cause the provider’s server to ignore the request even though the modem has a working cable signal.
Leave DNS on automatic unless the provider has supplied fixed DNS addresses. Do not enable PPPoE merely because a username and password appear in the router menu. PPPoE is a separate authentication method and is common on some Australian broadband services, but a hostname-based DHCP service normally requires Dynamic IP instead. Selecting the wrong WAN type is a common reason for seeing a connected modem with no usable internet access.
Some Edimax firmware includes a MAC address cloning option. Use it only when the provider has confirmed that access is tied to the old router or modem’s Ethernet MAC address. If cloning is required, copy the address carefully from the previous device and save the setting. Otherwise, leave MAC cloning disabled because an unnecessary cloned address can create a second fault when the ISP expects the new router to register normally.
Save or apply the WAN settings and wait for the router to restart its internet connection. The status page should eventually display a WAN IP address, gateway and DNS information. An address such as 0.0.0.0, a blank gateway or repeated DHCP failures indicates that the hostname, connection type, cable arrangement or modem registration still needs attention.
Configure Wireless And Local Access
After the WAN settings work, open the wireless section of the Edimax interface. Choose a clear network name that does not reveal the home address, surname or router password. In a busy apartment building in Melbourne or Sydney, nearby networks may occupy many channels, so a simple name helps residents identify the correct connection without exposing personal details.
Use WPA2-Personal or WPA3-Personal when the model supports it. If the router offers WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode, it may be a practical choice for a household containing older smart televisions, printers or cameras. Avoid WEP and open wireless access. Set a long, unique wireless password and keep it separate from the administrator password.
Use the automatic channel setting initially. If wireless performance is poor, inspect nearby networks with a reputable Wi-Fi analysis tool and adjust the channel according to the band and local congestion. The 2.4 GHz band travels farther but is more crowded, while 5 GHz or 6 GHz can provide higher performance at shorter range when supported by the Edimax model and client devices.
Update the Edimax firmware if a version is available from the manufacturer for the exact model and hardware revision. Download firmware only from a trusted Edimax source, connect the router to stable power and avoid interrupting the update. Test The Connection And Resolve Common Faults

If websites open by IP address but not by name, the problem is likely DNS rather than the hostname. Test automatic DNS first, then use DNS servers recommended by the ISP or a reputable public provider. If the connection drops at regular intervals, compare the Edimax uptime and WAN lease information with the modem’s signal lights. Regular loss of synchronisation points towards the modem, coaxial service or provider network rather than wireless configuration.
Once the connection is stable, save a copy of the final Edimax settings if the firmware provides an export function. Store the hostname and router credentials securely, not in a public note or an unprotected text file.
